DEEP ELLUM PARKING GARAGE

Deep Ellum is the entertainment heart of Dallas. It’s where young professionals gather to let loose, enjoy music, food, drinks, and social events. Unfortunately Dallas is a car centered city meaning Deep Ellum is inundated with traffic and lacks sufficient parking. This project hoped to design a parking structure which would be trendy enough to ‘fit in’ the Deep Ellum scene, but also functional to support the cost of dedicating valuable real estate to parking. Our team suggested a portion of the lower level be dedicated to a multi-function space where different events could take place — an art exhibition, a workshop, a small concert, etc. Since cost was a high priority we suggested the budget be dedicated to this multi-function space and to clad the garage with steel cables. These cables could warp, pinch, and expand as they wrap the structure but also serve as a vehicular safety barrier. This simple and industrial aesthetic could be matched by raw concrete which has portions that are graffiti-ed or painted.
